Community Tips
Record a better slate, get a better breakdown.
Lighting
Face a window for soft, natural light — it's the easiest win.
Avoid overhead lights that cast harsh shadows under your eyes.
No backlighting — don't stand with a window or bright light behind you.
If filming at night, use a desk lamp bounced off a white wall for even light.
Framing
Frame from chest up — like a passport photo but more relaxed.
Keep your eyes in the top third of the frame.
Leave a little space above your head — don't crop your forehead.
Centre yourself. No extreme angles.
Camera
Use your phone's front camera — it's good enough.
Hold it at eye level or slightly above. Not below your chin.
Lock focus by tapping your face on screen before recording.
Keep the phone steady — prop it up or lean it against something.
Audio
Find a quiet space — no TV, music, or traffic noise.
Speak clearly and at a natural volume.
Stay within arm's length of the phone for best audio pickup.
The Slate Itself
Keep it to 15 seconds.
Just say: "Hi, my name is [your name]." That's it.
Be natural — don't perform. We want your genuine presence.
The less you give, the more accurate your breakdown will be.
